Snowchains are required to be carried by law in many Alpine areas in Australia. Winter tyres are not required and rare.
In Australia, the BMW manuals have always said the chains should be fitted to the rear wheels of X5.
I think BMW has a concern with chains fitted to wide tyres with a low profile. eg: 305/40 R20, although this is only speculation. The wide surface area of the tread and low profile, means chains are not adequately supported with sufficient sidewall grip on the lower profile tyres.
