To my knowledge, she did not apply for government assistance. She took only social security because she viewed it as restitution - it's money you've paid in yourself. She opposed the forced redistribution of of wealth, as she believed it was not ours to redistribute. If she had collected welfare (i.e., someone else's funds), it would be hypocritical. To reclaim your own earnings from the state was something she saw as decreasing the injustice of being forced to pay it in in the first place.

Well maybe the people she criticized and called parasites, moochers viewed social security as restitution as well. How much you collect is based on how much you paid into the system, that's how social security works.
At the end she was a parasite, moocher, looter...
