Personally, with Black Sapphire, I wouldn't either. But visually getting rid of the side vents is something I like, especially since they are without function.
On the front, I think what makes the black grille a bit "hmm..notsureish" are the Chrome parts below. With the lower Chrome accents being the only ones, I think your eyes automatically drop to them. Maybe they - instead of the grille - are the ones that should go? Try by masking with some black tape?
