I'm surprised the SA would use that as a selling point considering how much negative publicity steer-by-wire received on the Q50. But I suppose I'm also not too surprised considering SA's are so hit or miss.

Nissan tends to invest a lot of money into technologies that sound great on paper, but in practical use are completely useless and in some cases worse than the traditional method. Steer by wire, variable compression motor, and of course everyone's favorite - CVT.

In theory, steer-by-wire should allow for greater comfort, and better self-driving integration. In reality, it feels wonky in spirited driving, robs the driver of any joy (a common theme of 2010 and newer Nissan/Infiniti cars despite their best efforts), and the integration with self driving has not been executed well at all.

The variable compression motor was supposed to be revolutionary, allowing it to adjust the engine's compression ratio in real time based on what's being asked of it. This was supposed to provide power when needed, and save fuel when not needed. In reality? Completely average fuel consumption and has provided no benefit whatsoever.

Last but not least, CVT's in nearly their entire lineup (I believe it's even starting to infiltrate the Infiniti lineup). And incredibly bad CVT at that - remember the class action lawsuit due to the CVT's going to shit in the Altima?

So why'd I even bother with the Q50? Well.... back in 2016... you inject any car with 400 hp and it instantly becomes more interesting. I'm happy to say I've moved on to greener pastures however.

Some SAs are really something else.

For my x5 I actually went to a different dealer than when I got my m2. Because the first dealer, a veteran sales guy who gave me the speech about how long he has been with BMW and racing and a bunch of other blah blah blah. Told me I'm not able to order the x5 sdrive 40i with 3rows + m sport. Thanks to this forum I went back with the BMW NA ordering guide but I was again adamantly told by the veteran SA that it could not be done.

I went to a different dealer and placed the order the same day.
I still go to the first dealer for service tho. They have superb customer service. Maybe I'll meet that veteran racer SA someday and I can kindly point to him my 7 seater m sport.
