Purchase advice

My 5 year old is asking for one, we plan to limit his time but cannot hold out forever. I have been "out of the game" for near 20 years, grew annoyed with the poor gameplay in racing games so bailed.

So my question is, what would suit us best? I need something with easy games suitable for beginners but yeah i'd like to ensure I have access to a few decent racing games for myself. The other issue is I understand the consoles have all gone past just playing games and have the potential to go all 'HAL' on your entertainment set up. I hear issues re. endless updates, connectivity issues and so on and so forth.

I need it as stress free as possible but not gimmicky ala Wii which I found to be utter rubbish.

Any thoughts?
