Hhhm, tell him now that the free two year trial is over, there's a rental charge and possibly a maintenance charge for any future use - in addition to the new rental charges. This approach does two things: A) You look charitable due to the recognition of the two year extended free trial. B) The neighbor gets an 'opportunity' to reflect on his free loading behavior - or just accept the new rental use charges as well as the future maintenance charges (or back dated charges). You could also use psychological projection and simply start asking to borrow his equipment and exploit the equity you have already built up by allowing his borrowing of your equipment free for two years. Perhaps borrowing his car, boat, or something else for a month or so - free of charge - would be an equitable reciprocity request.
