Personally I feel CarPlay does a good job of keeping overly distracting apps off the screen by limiting the CarPlay compatibility so I'd prefer that any day. But that's just what works for me/I feel safer with. Plus I never miss any of my standard apps that aren't CarPlay compatible.

Yes, you are right, it certain fits the Apple - streamline - design approach. We've had it for a few years in my wife's car, I played around with it a couple of times but have no use for it. To each their own.
