I used
SEM Self Etching primer #39673 ($30 Amazon) but also Rustoleum has one in dark green that would work
(I used it on my 535 exhaust tips and it had no issues after years) and is available at Lowes Depot along with the engine paint -
Duplicolor Low Gloss Black Engine Enamel #DE1634.
I might actually go back and put a coat of
semi-gloss black engine paint on it since that would match better with the surround.
Also, doing this with cans is harder than just using an airbrush, where you can be very precise. I got a Paasche H-3MH for $60.
