Not necessarily. The standard TPMS works off the ABS, measuring the rotation of the wheels. The optional upgrade to display the temperature and pressure requires the tyre valves to be replaced and coding.

Either way, these are what came on my car when new, and I had no problem activating tire pressure and temperature readings on bimmercode. In fact, it didn't even require "expert" level coding. Quick, easy, painless.
The exact same was true on my 2016 340i msport as well. No "mechanical" work needed to be done to view pressure/temp. Just simple coding.
