It's unfortunate that you can't get a non-sport V8 anymore, but consider how good the B58 is. The X5 40i is just about as fast as a BMW F30 335i. How can you consider that underpowered? I think with how powerful they've made the base engine, they figure that anyone who really wants to step up to the V8 will most likely want an M Sport model with performance bits on it. It wasn't too long ago where V8s were making in the 300hp range. And that's naturally aspirated power where you'd really have to wind the engine out.

Also, the advertised power numbers are 335hp vs 523hp. Remember the M50i uses the new V8 from the M850i. So we're talking nearly a 200hp gap here. Considering that, $15k seems like a steal. People routinely spend more money for less power.
