I haven't liked my fair share (GTs I thought were horrible but I know someone who bought one and he loved it). With a world this large there is a niche for anything and remember cars like this are huge profit makers for BMW. They would rather sell one X6 instead of two 1/2 series cars. Just like they would rather sell any M over the base, margins are higher on those (because they are lower volume).
I agree with your point, but margins are high due to the cost to produce, the cost of the options, and what they can actually charge for them. Not really because of the lower volume.

The X5 is actually the most profitable car for BMW and I wouldn't call that low volume.

An X5 doesn't cost a ton more to produce over a 3 series, but you can charge more especially for options.

On any M series, carbon-ceramic brakes cost just about nothing in R&D and not much more in material but they can charge a ton for it.

Volume is the other side of the equation, you better believe BMW wants to sell a ton of 1/2 series, while they make less profit on each one the higher volume over an X6 blows away the actual cash they bring in.

Sure, in a perfect world, they could sell all X6Ms at the same volume of a 2 series but thats not reality.

Anyway, I like the X6M I think it's a monster.
