As three major U.S. auto manufacturers plan to shutter plants amid coronavirus concerns, a BMW spokesperson said production at the German car maker's Upstate facility has not been impacted as of Wednesday afternoon.

General Motors and Ford announced Wednesday plans to close all North American plants until March 30 at the earliest to allow for deep cleaning, and the Associated Press reported Fiat Chrysler will partially shut down factories.

The decisions came as unions pressured the companies to shut down production to promote worker safety, the AP reported.

In an emailed statement sent Wednesday, BMW spokesperson Phil Dilanni said the company has instructed nonessential employees to work remotely and has implemented social distancing and heightened sanitation policies at plants and offices, but he said production has not been affected.

BMW's 7 million-square-foot manufacturing campus off Interstate 85 in Greer employs roughly 11,000 people, making it among the largest employers in the Upstate.

Dilanni said the automaker has also suspended all travel, cancelled in-person meetings, removed all chairs and tables to promote social distancing, and is disinfecting the plant every day in response to coronavirus concerns.
