Theoretically it could be any metal part but you just need to be sure that the metal part is electrical ground and without any sort of coating, paint, etc. BMW knows people store their cars, don't drive them much, etc and have always provided a positive terminal with a red plastic cap. For the ground, I look for some kind of terminal with a ground wire attached but have used strut mounting bolts in other cars. The battery tender will not illuminate its LED if it doesn't detect a complete circuit. Yes, I keep the X3 on the tender the whole time its in the garage cause we only use it for trips, so it sits a lot.
