I just changed my X5's oil for the second time. This time I added 6 quarts after draining it and changing the filter, and the on-board display still showed it was at the full level when I checked. My conclusion is that there's a pretty wide range where the car will still show the oil as full - probably so people don't come back to the dealer after an oil change looking for a top-off when it's not reading 100% full. Ah, how I miss a real dip-stick!
