Serious question: From a manufacturer's retrofit point of view, what is that difference?
My answer is, both seem to be a component at the end of a designed, engineered chain that require software. Seems like the replacement, as least as we've seen articulated here, wouldn't be much: extract the old, plug in the new, update the software.
Thus factoring out the replacement effort,
seems like the only difference would be BMWNA doesn't want to pay for 2 screens per vehicle (1 no touch, 1 touch) since the old non-touch screens would probably be worthless. No doubt BMW accountants are saying
"but the non-touch screen is still a screen! It's 98% of what's promised and, looking at the data, most people aren't using it anyway!"
From a business point of view that's absolutely the right call ...
From a customer & PR point of view, for a luxury product that solves a specific problem in it's customer's lives, it seems extraordinarily stupid.
