If you have comfort access then you have the NFC readers in the door handles already. I don't see any reason why the feature can't come to cars that meet the required spec they list (comfort access - SA322 and and active connected drive service). BMW said that drive recorder wouldn't be available initially for earlier MY cars but then reversed it and allowed people to add the subscription if the car supported it. They are probably just trying to slow down the enquiries at launch and then release it to the MY19/20 cars as a second phase. My car was manufactured this year and has an active digital key subscription. I'll be mightily pissed off if I can't use the feature on my car considering the subscription is there and active.
