Seems a little redundant to pull the paddle when you're probably gonna floor it anyway and hit the kickdown switch which accomplishes the same thing. Not sure why that doesn't work in the M car in the video posted above.

If you're in manual shift mode, in the upper gears (7 or 8) the kickdown switch wont' automatically downshift. At least that's my understanding from watching the demo on the M4 in the video above. Kickdown will only downshift if you're in automatic mode.

Correct, only on auto mode. I just tried in both comfort and adaptive and both works with just a kickdown.
I also tried it in manual mode, as per the manual I posted above. I was moving at 50 mph, set to M8, kickdown and immediately pull the left paddle shifter and it switched to M2. Put a smile to my face 😁
