While BMW does have some engines with two turbos, those with one are usually referred to as twin-scroll, and have several modes so that they spin up faster so the torque is more even across the range versus a smaller one that would not peak out until turning faster. Older designs were really peaky, not providing much boost until it got above a certain speed, then it was somewhat radical.
