The center of gravity is lower of that weight so the car should hold the road better. The new M cars for instance are much heavier than the older ones and yet handle better. As you say, all things equal, heavier is worse, but here all things are not equal. The hybrid engine, lower center of gravity and different tuning of suspension because of the air suspension etc.
