I understand and know to code with the engine off but do you have to be in diagnostic mode ? What is the difference from diagnostic mode versus the acc. just being on with engine off ? TIA

When in accessory (aka standby) mode, some ECUs are on, but most aren't. In diagnostic mode, all ECUs are on. If you are not in diagnostic mode, your coding tools will only see a very small number of ECUs rather than all of them. With 42+ ECUs, that's not a complexity you ought to want to deal with — just be in diagnostic mode.
