I don't buy ground coffee anymore. Get some decent whole beans and a burr grinder and it's a night and day difference, especially when grinding them right before brewing the coffee. Yes, it's more work, but totally worth it IMO if you have the time.
Right now I'm using an Encore burr grinder and Chemex pour over, but they can be ground for french press too. My favorite beans have been Sightglass so far, but I'm still experimenting.
