Well, for one thing, it may knock off your tow hook cover.
That aside, swirling brushes contain all the dirt from the last filthy Honda Civic they washed, may dislodge other parts (trim, mirrors, antenna) that stick up off the surface, and yes, may eventually ruin your paint. Other than that, they work well.
