Internal code names started with E for Entwicklung (Development). Has progressed to F, G, etc.

Someone says they drive a 3-series, but the code name tells you the generation: E30, E36, E46, F30, G20

Furthermore, BMW has in the past sold different generation models in the same model year. For example, in the US, the 1999 323i *sedan* was an E46. The 1999 323is *coupe* was the old E36.

The only 1-series sold in the US was E82 and E88. Other models (hatchback, etc) were sold in other markets. The F22 is the 2-series coupe. There is however a F20/F21 sold in other markets as a 1-series, both of which are hatchbacks. So that is why the forums appears slightly confusing.
