You should tell him this, and ask him to trial you with something else - I bet he also has Irish or bourbon (or tell him you want to try something as different from the last one as possible). Anybody who is really into Scotch knows it isn't something everyone loves, and that there is tremendous range in the flavors. Some of my favorites are so offputting to most that, during prohibition, they were sometimes imported as 'medical disinfectant' because the customs guys couldn't imagine anybody drinking it (e.g. Laphroaig).
