The dash cam turns off when you turn off the car, it is 12v outlet, unless it has external battery.
Or...just get the the Magic Pro and you can set the dash cam for 6, 12, 18 or 24 hours run time. Mine works like a charm and set for 12 hours. I usually get home around 7p and leave for work around 630a so the 12 hour window is perfect for me. You don't need the external battery either.
