I've only had the issue when my phone was already hot but it never overheated. I've used wireless charging for 7 years now on my Android devices, most recently an S9+.
That's probably my problem - thick case with 4 credit cards in it (which do not get de-magnetized in case you're wondering).

But I also have a wireless charger bedside for overnight charging and the phone isn't hot after all night on that!
