Potential causes:
1. Very thick case => leads to lower efficiency ie more heat
2. using more power or equivalent power to what's going in so it gets hot
3. Ambient temperature is high or the device was already warm from outside or high usage
I've only had the issue when my phone was already hot but it never overheated. I've used wireless charging for 7 years now on my Android devices, most recently an S9+.

That's probably my problem - thick case with 4 credit cards in it (which do not get de-magnetized in case you're wondering).
But I also have a wireless charger bedside for overnight charging and the phone isn't hot after all night on that!

Depends on a variety of things, charger output (what it's actually sending to your phone) efficiency of the charger based on where it lines up with the coil or coils, how clean is the power going in each charger etc. I'm not an electrical engineer, more of a chemical one so I can't go too in depth here but there are a lot of factors to consider.
Wireless charging creates induced magnetic fields so it won't affect your credit cards
