Ditto Marty in NY...that is the same type of hose that has been attached to every BMW battery I've owned that has been enclosed inside the trunk or below the rear seat. It allows gases that are generated naturally by the battery to escape to the exterior of the car. Any battery that is enclosed inside the vehicle and doesn't have enough air flow to remove these gases (unlike the engine bay)..should always have a vent tube attached to remove these gases.
