I saw another article on this test which had a statement from BMW that said that the system in the car they tested is NOT designed to detect pedestrians, just cars. I realize that the article linked above states that the BMW had a pedestrian detection system in it, BMW refutes that claim.
Long story short, perhaps the x5 system is different.
