In manual mode you need to have an idea what gear you are in so that you know what you are going to shift to for whatever the required situation is. If the box is on full auto it's going to decide for you whether you can see the gear number or not, so does it really make that much difference? I can't imagine you would be that bothered if it was in 5th instead of 6th, or 6th instead of 7th, the shift is so smooth anyway...
