Funny because I've driven manual transmissions most of my life and only switched to automatics when BMW stopped offering them on the 5-series. Never, did I ever think about what specific gear I was in much less while driving an automatic. My gear selection was always dependent on feedback from the engine and driving conditions. Sure, subconsciously I knew but I didn't need an indicator to tell me I was in the wrong gear.
That said, flip the shifter to manual and tap a paddle and the dash will give you an indicator of the gear.
