Easier to go from illuminated -> black than the other way, as you will already have the wiring in the car.
I managed to put the black frame from an OEM black grille on the silver slats of my illuminated grille (the lights are in the slats, not the frame). It looked okay but I wanted all black so ended up just swapping the whole thing and not using the illuminated feature. I still have the wiring in the car so if BMW ever release a black illuminated grille, I'm good to go.
