In my X7 the rear daytime running lights are always on when it's daylight out if I have the DRL box checked. I'm on iStep version 03/2020.31. This also worked on my previous iStep version of 07/2019.59.

What is the advantage of rear lights being on during daylight?

As all running lights, better visibility. Also some rear lights for people that forget their headlights after dusk, but that's a moot point on the X5 due to forced automatic lights mode.
