I think the moral of the story is to wait a year or two after a new series comes out, as BMW seem to "drip-feed" the release of their models and engines. They come out with what they think will be volume models, then the niche versions (and engines) later.

The dealer told me back in late 2018/early 2019 that there wouldn't be a 40d (equivalent to the F15), as the 40i satisfied that middle ground high performance category, but seems he was full of BS.

Like you, my next car will be Electric or at a Hybrid/Electric. I'm looking at keeping my 30d for around 10 years, and hopefully Hydrogen fuel-cell technology will have matured by then too. BMW are supposed to be big in that technology.
