There is a huge difference.

30d is set up for economic driving and to not struggle with the weight.

50d was set up for performance.

I just took a long trip with mine M50d
I did 1900km in 15h30min temperature set to 21°C, an average of 122km/h and I spent 210€ in Diesel with an full loaded X5.
All this reaching multiple times 200km/h and I did France (from switzerland to Spain) always over 160km/h. So I'm very very satisfied with performance and economy of this engine.

Sad to see this engine go away, just thinking they may bring some solution like the 40d mild hybrid. Till then, goodbye M50d.
6.3 seconds to 100kph (60mph) is not band for an "economic driving" setup, and the 30d can still do 160kph comfortably.

Here in Australia, the 50d demands an additional $20k (AUD) and to be frank I dont thing that's worth 1s in acceleration performance (is that HUGE?), nor the extra premium I'd be paying in fuel AND Insurance every year.

It will be interesting to see what happens to re-sale value now for the 50d, discontinued lines usually don't favour resale values.
If worth the money difference? Well this is always almost pointless question. Bmw has the individual colors worth the difference well probably not but Bmw still offers the opportunity. And for some persons it worths the extra money. It's like an normal M or a M competition. Will have always a price difference.

I will still buy an M50d over an 30d.

I still think best value performance choice is the 40d.

I don't know there but I think in Europe the resell price for the M50d could raise now...
