I am also curious about the annoyance factor as well (leaving increase wear-and-tear issue out for now).
I am curious because I just figured out why ASS annoys me so much in my non-MHT X5: it's my specific driving style and technique. Decades ago, I was trained, learned, and have practiced my entire life to slightly let off the brake just before final "lock" stop to reduce the discomfort (for me and passengers) of the stop "lock" impact (dampening the typical forth-and-back oscillation). It seems that style fools the non-MHT ASS system to pretty much always turn off the engine and then immediately turn it back on, creating anything but a smooth operation. And I am not changing my style, it is done for a good reason.
