Most rental companies are now starting to offer cars like the G37 and 350Z/370Z and the likes. In addition there are several rental agencies in Los Angeles that rents BMWs. It's hard for me to imagine "BMW CCA doesn't allow convertibles" being the sole obstacle to attending HPDSes hosted by the local chapters.

I'd rather not rent a vehicle when I can just join porsche club america for tracking or speed ventures, which I already do...The better option would be to just purchase an e30 or e36 m3 for the cost of renting
