The setting in Idrive is fake noise coming through the speakers. It does not impact the way the exhaust valves operate.
I "believe" the only way to open the valves full time, is by putting the car in sport+ mode. Even then, I still think they operate in different conditions.
By opening the valves full time, you always have "actual" exhaust sound..... outside the car.... although I barely notice a difference inside the car.
