Agreed and although there have been other posts on a reboot while driving (rare) or the iDrive screen going blank (rare) the OP's situation almost sounds like a head unit problem especially with iD not even starting up at all after starting the vehicle. It's technically there or the X5 wouldn't even start so head unit/screen issue most likely and the dealer can sort that out.
