Extended Warranty Thoughts
Would love your thoughts: Just bought a 21 X5MC with 22k. Love it. It’s under factory warranty for 9 months and then CPO for a year. I’d like to get a comprehensive warranty from a reputable company for as long as I can.
Looked into BMW and I can extend CPO w platinum protection - it gives me more coverage for my CPO year and then 2 additional years. Seems pretty steep at just under $5k. It would be unlimited mileage which seems nice but I only drive 8-9k/yr. Alternatively I can get a Fidelity platinum with 7 years of coverage from now plus 70k miles coverage for under $6k. Other option would be to wait until closer to the end of my current warranties and reassess (hard for me to tell if it will be cheaper in the future). The BMW warranty covers a little more such as shocks. The Fidelity warranty lasts a lot longer and I am leaning that way. Usually I would self insure but with the S63 and its hot V (esp being in Vegas) I think the heat will be an issue. Plus I keep reading about transfer case failures on X5 which does not seem like something I can do myself. Thx in advance, X |

Curious to know what you decide. I purchased extended warranty for my '22X5MC through my dealer when I purchased the car for an additional 2 years.
I probably overpaid for it but the peace of mind for me is worth it. Curious to what you decide as I do plan on keeping my car past 6 years and would like to try and warranty it after my 6 years are up. I got crazy lucky on my 2016 Lexus GS-F when they sold me an 8 year factory warranty after the initial 4 year warranty for $3,500. Basically that car had factory warranty for 12 years. The second owner is definitely enjoying that as a 2016 car has warranty until 2028 LOL

I was in the same boat as you not too long ago and posted a similar question. My operational decision came down to not trusting 3rd party warranty companies, and being unwilling to prepay 8k for the BMW warranty (7 year, 100k miles, no cpo). I'm not sure how long I plan to keep the car and still having to pay for preventative maintenance contributed to my decision.
I have heard fidelity is the way to go for a 3rd party. If you do buy BMW, if you get it through a California dealer they are required to offer a refund if you change your mind from what I understand. |

I got the 7 year from BMW for a 2023 with 6K miles. I don't trust any third party warranty.
I dont drive that much either. If I sell it or trade it in, there is pro rated refund. |

From what I have seen the BMW warranties are from date of in service. I ended up going with a Fidelity Platinum. With a $250 deductible it’s just over $800/yr.

One thing about Fidelity, the mileage and years start as soon as you buy it, so it's best to get that right when your warranty is about to expire. |

Is Fidelity the go to standard for extended warranties? I have to look into this really soon as well. I rather go with something reputable that works well with BMW than deal with the lowest cost option that ends up taking months to approve claims or tries to deny everything.

Fidelity is popular among many of the Porsche guys, I had it on an X5 previously and had a claim a few months into my BMW warranty expiring, the dealer did all of the work and Fidelity paid without any issues, it was a $3500 claim so paid for itself with one claim back then.
The main issue with these cars is the electronics failing, one problem and repairs are too costly. The platinum is the way to go since it covers almost everything including electronics. You can also get a refund at a prorated rate from Fidelity in case you cancel (trading the car in and still have Fidelity on it). It's also transferrable to another owner in case of a sale. |

Can someone confirm that the factory warranty is 4 year/50,000 miles and it starts at the purchase date?
Looking at Fidelity it says that the warranty starts the day you purchase it so it would make sense to buy it right when the factory warranty runs out?

The Fidelity warranty goes up dramatically with time and mileage. I played with pricing extensively and it goes up quite a bit from 3 to 5 years of age. I had CPO for a year and factory warranty for 10 months but it worked out better to buy a 7 year Fidelity plan now than to buy a 5 year plan for a 2 year older car. Additionally the Fidelity covered a lot of stuff that CPO doesn’t.
Lastly the Fidelity warranty plan goes up in cost every year. Cheers, X |

Fidelity covers your suspension, all electronically adjustable shocks / air suspension are covered under Fidelity Platinum and Gold coverage tiers.

This is what it says when I was reviewing quotes online: "All plans begin on the PLAN PURCHASE DATE and the CURRENT ODOMETER READING. In clearer terms, the years shown will begin TODAY and the mileage shown will be ADDED to the current odometer reading."

Just keep in mind only one of these mentioned Fidelity discount retailers offers customer service post sale. The "website that sells them" says you're on your own after your purchase from them.
