My first BMW, X5 45e
So, after some months/weeks spent on test drives and calculations, decided to go for a BMW as my next car.
Coming from a Volvo XC90, and current Belgian tax regulations, left me to choose between the hybrid X5, hybrid Mercedes GLE, all electric Audi E-tron or Tesla X. Chose what I would say was the most comfy seats, great ride quality, and the kids approved X5, 45e, Carbon Black, M sport package, Tartufo interior and a lot of bells and whistles. Ordered the car with the 20" 740 wheels, as I ordered the hitch to be able to carry our bikes, and will probably fit other wheels once delivered. The lady of the house got me to go for the extended shadow look, so for wheels I will probably go black to, I guess 742 Delivery schedules in September, so time to think about those wheels! Anybody out there that can compare ride comfort between 740 and 742? much appreciated! |

with the 45e air suspension, you will not notice significant ride difference, so go with what you want. what size 742? Note: highly not recommended to go with 22" on 45e due to lower load rating than 20/21". we haven't crunched the numbers, but 22" will likely be out of spec for the heavy 45e high voltage battery.

If BMW advises against it I wouldn't put them on. If nothing happens you will be fine. Things start to get difficult when insurances companies or BMW have to pay for damage or garantee. Btw good choice. I have been thinking about the same. |

Anyway I think that if in the US it it not possible and in Europe not with a tow hitch it must be the weight the 22 inch wheels can handle? |

yes, the thought is that the lower load rating for 22" is the reason, but even then, USA models should be able to order 22" without the hitch since EU models can, so again, the real reason at least for the USA models must be regulatory, not the 22" wheels per se. |

Dealer didn’t come with a clear explanation but was willing to fit 22 inch after delivery. Insurance wise, I might look out for some nice 21 inch though. |

Just got my 45e deliverd few days ago, It came with 20'' wheels, I was trying to order 22'' but the option was not available. Went to the dealer yesterday and ordered 22'' black 742 and pirelli tires, unfortunately I have to wait 30-60 days go get those delivered from Germany (as my dealer told me they are out of stock in US now).
I will try to give you an answer in few months if I notice any difference between 20 and 22''. I have the same build as you have, except I have Sapphire Black, same tartufo seats, I love them. |

Sort of off topic, but if you were coming from an XC90 T8 (or even T6 for that matter), you'll really like the X5 45e. I just made the same change.
My only nitpick is that I lost some cargo space in the X5 and there is less storage cubby capacity in the front.

6 weeks earlier than planned, I was able to pick up the car last Tuesday!
Technically it is not my first BMW anymore, as we got hold of a barely used 1 year old i3 in June. Reading too much on BMW + long wait = easy to convince Now on the X5, more important, all options are present!! Had to move to B&W instead of HK, but the rest is there. On the downside, I ordered 742M in jet black, got the bi-color installed. The dealer will have them powdercoated, but I'm kind of doubting now Rear badges all removed, fender badges will go off also. I will probably miss the space of the XC90, but loved the ride and assist systems on the first 250k trip! Carbon Black on tartufo, will post more pics soon!
