Visiting Munich this summer

My wife and I will be in Europe for a vacation this summer and the trip ends in Munich. Is there a tour of the headquarters and/or factory that I should be considering?

No plans for a 4 series purchase this year (maybe next), so European delivery isn't on the table. I know, bad planning.

Hey, I will actually be there on the 20th of this month (for work sadly) but will have free time to check things out. I am also curious in your question.

You should go through the BMW museum, that's the round building and then walk through BMW World. I did get a guided tour but can't remember how I found it, poke around on their website.

I don’t normally recommend touristy areas but every time I go to Munich, I have to take the Ubahn to Marienplatz and come up the subway stairs and there is the grand Rathaus-Glockenspiel bigger than life, very impressive, even if seen many times, so do that.
While in the BMW museum area, go to my friends ice cream shop - Sweet Monkeys, If you do go, ask for Peter or Stephanie and tell them Marty from Binghamton sent you. Their ice cream is the best I have ever had anywhere in the world, Peter makes it all himself. Here is the address, its not far from the museum .. .Haidelweg 13, 81241 Pasing, Munich

This is their FB page https://www.facebook.com/SweetMonkey...Eisvergnuegen/

Near BMW world is the Olympic Tower in the Olympic Park, go to the top, that will give you great photo opportunities, not only of BMW world but also Munich as its something like 900 ft high. If you like pork, you’ll have plenty of opportunities :-) and if you would like to try their pork knuckle, two of my favorites are the Haxnbauer which is just around the corner from the Glockenspiel and one a bit further away called Andechs monastery brewery, good food, beer and a fun time.

Schloss Nymphenburg is worth going to if you like that sort of thing, check it out. Right around the corner from the Glockenspiel is the Viktualienmarkt, both tourists and locals go there, its a large farmers market, lots to eat, drink and see. Munich’s Ubahn is easy to use and gets you anywhere you might want to go.

Thanks for the info, I will try that ice cream

I'm planning to stop in Munich for a day or two and then visiting the Obersalzberg near Berchtesgaden when driving to Austria for our summer vacation in August.

Thats such a beautiful area you'll be in. We spent about a month between Munich, Salzburg and Aschau last year, didn't want to come back home. Enjoy!

Yeah, Peter and Steph's ice cream is super. Being friends, we were able to try all their flavors, like weird stuff (from a US pair of eyes) like Basil/Lemon, Tonka Bean, Dark Beer, etc. They spend quite a bit of time prepping the fresh ingredients and yes, he pours in bottles of dark beer for the beer ice cream :-) Loved them all. hic!

yes, I know. Most of the time we take our vacations in that part of Germany and Austria.
However the Schwarzwald is also superb. But there are still so many beautiful places in Germany and Austria to go to

By then it's with the X5 cruising down the autobahn

Garage List
I was there with the family a couple of years ago. Munich is amazing and the suggestions here are great. Keep in mind that Summer is vacation time and the factory tours where not available for the days when I was there in August. However, both the Welt and the Museum was open.

Hi,

If you are driving from Munich to Austria you could try to do some parts of the Alpine Road, I am sure it will make your top-5 list of best driving experiences:

When at the BMW Experience Center in Welt you can take most any BMW out on an hourly basis. It's called BMW On Demand. There is a desk in the center to book. It's super easy.

X4m/x3m for 55 euro/hr
M2 49
M4 55
M5 89
M850 65
Etc....

I would go for the M5!

Book on line to choose your car. Or you can do in person. They give you routes to drive...Autobahn!!!

Go for it! Need to be back by like 6PM.

So take the U-Bahn (underground subway) as another poster suggested to the Olympic station from your hotel and you are there. The place is huge. Get there early. Check out Elvis' 507. It's a beauty. And budget 1k for the gift shop. It's epic.

Another nice place to visit is Deutsches Museum, as museum of science and technology. Unfortunately, it is not on par with the typical excellent German museum experience and quality, but worth a visit anyway, mostly for the historical departments such as room-filling steam engines.

Personally speaking, and this all depends on your interests, but the Hofbrauhaus is really a tourist attraction. Yes, I did get some pretty good tasting food and beer there but its full of tourists and was a let down for me. There's just something about being in a German brew house and everywhere you look, its full of loud drunken tourists.

Hofbrauhaus is definitely touristy. If you want more local feel, I truly recommend getting in U Bahn, which in and of itself is cool, get off at a main station north of downtown (10 min ride), and pick any local place at the street level.

Look for the sign of the beer you like, and go there.

I recommend Munchner Freiheit.

See pic. Tons of pubs here.

Or just wing it and make discoveries on the fly. That is fun as hell.

The food is good and the beer is fine too. There is something about having beer served by a woman who can easily beat you at arm wrestling.

I wouldn't spend the day there, but it is a historic venue and a popular tourist attraction and since I was a tourist I'm okay with that. Its worth a quick stop while visiting the area.

For sure. Not too late in day to make sure you get there before the Biergarten closes.
