Cool Boot/Trunk Sill Replacement

The plastic clips holding my boot (trunk for our American cousins) loading sill all snapped off a month or so ago, meaning that any time I opened it the sill would stay up (annoying!). Then it finally detached all together.

I struggled to find a guide for how to replace the part (lots for E40 and a few for F15, but none that I could find for G05).

First post here, but thought I'd document the process for anyone else in the same boat as me!

This was very easy to do, a lot easier from what I can see, than the previous gens.

Part info:
  • Part Number: 51477479947
  • Description: Loading sill cover
  • Quantity: 1
  • Price: £ 122.04 + VAT
  • I have ordered a number of items from this UK dealer, who is very responsive and quick to ship (didn't really shop around much since I trust them to get it right!)
Tools needed:
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • TORX T15 screwdriver
Instructions:

1. Pop out the Seven (7) plastic clips keeping the netting holder in place using a flat head screwdriver:

2. Remove the Four (4) T15 screws from the back side of the part

3. [Optional] I pulled off the covers to the bottom sill hooks to make it easier to remove the sill cover.

4. Thats basically it, the old one slides out (pull it towards the front of the car) and then put the new one back in and re attached all the fasteners. Only gotcha for me was that I failed to hook in the metal springs into their holders on the new part the first time, but luckily I had tested the boot opening/closing before I screwed everything back in.

Voila, like new!:

Used these instructions to replace my sill cover yesterday. Thanks! I think the dealer broke it trying to install their stupid GPS add on 😆

Completed replacement of the cover yesterday. Thank you! The F15 models I saw videos look much more complicated. This one was super easy, got it done in 30 minutes. Dealership wanted $350 for labor to replace this.

So what is it that actually "breaks" on this part? Recently bought a used 22 X5 and the first week this part always went down when opening the tailgate and then one day it just stayed up. Not sure if there was something I did or what. Is there a way to repair it so it doesn't stay vertical when opening the tailgate?

There is no way to repair it short of replacing it. Its hard to explain but there are springs on plastic guide that keep the part pressed against the rear tailgate. The guides break so you lose the spring tension against the trim piece.
