I would be very nervous that my iphone battery would die while at dinner. I'm always flying way to close to the sun with battery life.

Apparently it's Apple that's preventing this by not allowing third parties access to the NFC Chips for security reasons.

Nope.

The issue is not with Apple not allowing full access to its NFC, but rather the CCC digital key specification that Apple has chosen to implement. CCC has only released the V1.0 of the digital key specification and this is implemented in some Android phones. Apple has chosen to wait for the V2 of the specification to be released (expected Q1 2019). The V2 of the spec eliminates the need to visit the dealer to set up a phone as a key making the whole digital key experience much smoother. The current specification requires the phone to be 'setup' (usually by the dealer) a one-time activity for every new phone or whenever one changes the phone, I would rather wait for the V2 to be released and I am sure BMW/Apple is working closely with CCC on the draft versions of the V2 spec. It will soon be available will be my guess

Yes because your phone has to be in that cradle to start the car with the digital key.

So we need an android phone for digital key. But BMW does not support Android Auto. So I guess we have to carry both an android phone to start the car and an iphone for carplay.

Has anybody looked into the card that was supposed to be made available? It's a card that you keep in your wallet and if you put it on the NFC pad it acts like a key.

Perhaps Jay or another CA can investigate the timing of availability - supposedly this was going to be included with Comfort Access after a certain date and there was a possibility that earlier purchasers could request a card after availability without charge.

I find this hilarious also, no android auto but you can only open your car with android - what the heck were they thinking, hopefully the iphone stuff gets sorted early 2019 - carrying a key around is so Q4 2018.

I think they'll fix iOS support, but as was said, it's based on having a CoreNFC framework that allows access to it. 12.1 started it, but there are other standards at play. Eventually it will happen.

As for using my phone as a key regularly? Probably not, at least for me. For real, the Jaguar activity key is a smarter solution, at least for my lifestyle. I don't want to hold my phone up to my door handle every time I want to get in the car.

Ya would be nice it if worked like the key and in your pocket was good enough to be detected by the car - I will probably never use it either. Guess it is a good backup, I have always been a bit paranoid that the car is using the key in my wife's purse and then she leaves the car and somehow I go somewhere ignoring the message on the dash that there is no key, shutoff the car and then can't start it again - this would solve for that probably non existent scenario.

Once they connect to iPhone would we not be able to use Apple Watches to open the car rather than having to pull out the iPhone?
