21 All Season 275/40/21 on all 4 corners
I just talked with Tire Tack and they said I can do 275/40/21 (the stock front size) on all 4 corners. He said the tire will fit a wheel from 9-11" wide.
Im reaching out to fellow Bimmerposters to confirm if this will work (winter setup) and not cause any problems. He said the rolling diameter is exactly the same. He found a really good snow rated all season tire for me at a great price. I look forward to your feedback. Last edited by ted920; 11-13-2019 at 09:39 AM.. |

The U.S. fitment with the M740 wheels is 9jx20" at all four corners with 275/45/20 tires. Having a tire that can go on 9" and 10.5" wheels allows front/rear tire rotation which can't be done with the staggered tires.

Even though the tires are the same size, I'm not sure about rotating an 10.5" wide wheel to the fronts on an X5. The extra 1.5" of wheel has to go somewhere. The wheels may have a different offset front vs. rear.

If the tire will fit the rim, then it should work. OP - you could rotate the tires between wheels if you wanted that benefit. |

I agree... though that sounds like costly maintenance over time. Bonus would be always having balanced wheels

Good to know! I just picked up my X5 on 741M wheels. Will probably do the same for winter. Just to confirm, do you all have m-brakes?

Everyone, I am looking for a similar set-up for my 744 Orbit Grey Y-Spoke 21"
I am not able to find a winter or A/S tires on tirerack of the same size to go all 4 corners. It looks like the same size as 275/40-R21. Can someone please let me know what tires they are referring to? |

Here's the front Pirelli Scorpion Verde 275/40R21 A/S: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...ty=2&tab=Sizes And the rear 315/35R21 A/S: $$$$ https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...135VR1SVASXLN0 Front Pirelli Scorpion Winter 275/40R21 https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...m=74VR1SCORWXL BMW sells the Scorpion Winter rear tire only with the winter wheelset and I'm unable to locate the 315 for the rear on TR. You can run the same size winter front on the rear. Here's the Michelin Alpin 5 SUV snow tires: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...4VR1PA5SUVXLN0

Is it safe to assume I can do the staggered set-up with Pirelli Scorpion Verde even though it shows up as not compatible for X5? Please see attachment |

Porsche N0 designation on tires means it Porsche tested and approved. When I sold tires decades ago, I'd recommend to customers not to mix tire since the tread pattern could be slightly different, rubber compound etc. As long as the sizes match up to what's on your vehicle, you're good. It's one of the reasons why I shy away from 21s on my G05 know what a PITA it is to find tires for it.

This thread is really helpful since I will be on 21" style 744 stock Perf RF on staggered build. In my quest for A/S, I liked the Pirelli Scorpion Verdes and almost finalized it until I figured that they are non-RF. I am ready to go for a square setup if I can find A/S RF. But then trying to understand your above response why it is not ideal. Any info you can provide will really help. |

When you option 21" or 22" wheels, the front and rear tires (275 front and 315 rear) in addition to the front and rear wheels are different widths - 9.5" front and 10.5" rear. Square setup On the 20" the front and rear tires are the same size and widths (275 front and rear) with 9.5" wide front and rear wheels. Tire widths have a recommend wheel width range as to not pull the tire mounting too far in (smaller than recommended width) or stretching it too wide (larger than recommenced width). Here's a visual.

Ah like they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.
Thank you so much for this explanation. So basically to do a safe square setup I would have to not just do 4 x 275 tires but will have to buy 2 extra front wheel rims to mount on the rear and then shop for 4 x 275 tires which are A/S RF. Thanks so much for the great explanation. |

It's up to each owner to asses how much investment they want to put into managing their tires beyond OEM.
