Ha, it's a waste of time to use that charging pad, I gave up some time ago as even when properly placed it gets really hot while only adding about a 3% charge after an hour. I carry USB cables in the car, that works fine.

yeah I stopped using the charging tray 1.5 weeks into ownership. after almost 4 years, I’ve only used it for Digital Key purposes a handful of times. I was just pointing out one doesn’t need to contort to know when the phone is charging

I have a 2018 G30 and an iPhone 14 pro, Samsung s21 ultra and a Samsung S20 ultra. When charged with the built in wireless charger they all will heat to the point of thermal shutdown. I've complained to BMW even writing letters to the BMW USA and the local dealer. I even left my phones with the dealer to test the charger with the zone rep present and was told that there was nothing wrong with the charger. So I did research and found that the charger had changed part numbers 3 times in 6 months at the time, so I bought the latest and replaced the charger myself to no avail. I just gave up and bought plugin chargers and the over heating problem was solved, reasoning that BMW is a great car manufacturer not so much with the phone charging. I haven't used my wireless charger since 2018, I believe that the heat will shorten the life of the phone battery.

To tell you the truth I'm kind of disappointed that several years on the same problem persist. I would love to hear the reasons behind the lack of attention to what should be an easy fix. Oh that's right there is no problem per BMW.

Not sure if it’s related but my 15 plus Since the last iDrive update .40 phone doesn’t heat up like before. Still super slow charge though

This explains why it charges so slowly and why I won't bother to use it. If I want the phone to be charging, I want it to actually charge. The heat buildup will damage the battery over time and for getting next to no charge is not worth it. I'll probably end up using a MagSafe charger mounted somewhere. Also, the USB A port located nearby is not going to charge very quickly either. When at all possible, choose a USB C port for the most power/fastest charging.

I bought this to plug into the cig lighter/power port, super low profile, quickly charges the phone.

I see you still have a plastic film on your dash it's even on a volume knob?

On topic: What other uses do those charging trays get? I feel like it's a perfect space for the phone but then, like others, I don't want it to overheat.

No plastic film on anything, just a clean and glossy car :-) My sis-in-law made me a non conductive cover that I place on the built in charging pad so I can put my phone there without it trying to charge.

Previous posters said it was CarPlay and Waze that caused the overheating while using the wireless charger. Well, it doesn’t get hot using those apps while using the cable to charge.

Mine shutdown on Friday after being on the charger. High temp warning. Guess I won’t be using it again.

I’ve been using a 15W MagSafe mounted charger plugged in via a USB C PD adapter since Dec 2020

It’s got nothing to do with any app on the phone. Mine over heated while it was in sleep mode without any apps running in the background

the wireless charging tray houses the NFC sensor for Digital Key use primarily for pre-LCI X5. LCI X5 feature Digital Key Plus that doesn’t require physically placing the phone on the tray, but it’s there as a backup for when UWB Digital Key Plus isn’t working or for the digital keycard

the wireless charging tray also couples with the LTE compensator to boost the mobile cellular signal which explains its high cost (most people think the wireless charger option is only the charger)

despite the majority having poor experiences with the wireless charger, there have been many users who could use it, but those who used Waze suddenly could not

That is what had me thinking that it’s the phone heat management issue when it loaded with running apps, gps and inductive charging rather than faulty BMW charger. Some phone models may be better at heat management due to more internal resources such as iPhone pro max. My iPhone has no issues when wired charging and CarPlay.

My iphone is charged okay up to 80% if i use android auto, though it's getting quite hot. If you use carplay it will affect the phone temperature and stop charging to prevent overheating.

My OnePlus 9 Pro was charging ok (getting a bit warm, though), but my S24 Ultra does not charge, it just gets hot and slowly discharges even when running no apps on the phone.

the phone’s lack of adequate ventilation inside the armrest was the factor to overheating, not from CarPlay or running apps. the phone can manage the heat from wireless charging/apps, but you didn’t let it by placing it inside there

my MagSafe charger is mounted out in the open and I’ve had absolutely no issues with overheating while using CarPlay (almost 4 years with iPhone 10, 12 Pro, and 14 Pro and all with protective cases), and I always have at least eight apps open and running:

• Messages
• Phone
• Facebook
• Calendar
• Safari
• Spark (email)
• Parcel
• Apple Music
• **Apple or Google Maps during long trips if not using BMW Navi (I don’t use Waze)

wired charging is definitely more efficient than wireless charging as you found out

My 5 year old 2019 Ford charging pad gets warm, but works without issue. I suspect it's not hard to engineer a wireless charging pad in a vehicle, it just needs the power and probably a passive heat sink to help remove the heat of a phone charging in a tight enclosed space.

I bet many people have a case on their modern phone that interferes with the wireless charging function, but newer phones are so fragile that a case is almost mandatory.

As a poster said above, probably the best bet is an aftermarket 15 watt unit plugged into one of the cars higher wattage ports.

I remove the case before putting my phone in the charger, but it doesn't seem to help with S24.

My main beef with the system isn’t necessarily that it cooks the phone, but it cooks the phone and doesn’t charge worth a 💩. I think it charges less than 10% an hour. I just plug it in with a cable.
