I had this same issue last week. My key was no longer being recognized when I walked up to the car or when I was inside. I had to hold the fob next to the steering column to start the car.
This started happening the day before our scheduled service appointment at the dealer, so that worked out well. The found the battery in my fob was almost dead and replaced it. Works great now.

My wife had this the other day while driving home at 70mph. Came up with that error message then all systems went black until she got home. It would still drive fine. Restarted vehicle and all was back to normal.

For me it has happened a number of times. Never correlated the key thing to CarPlay so I can’t speak to that.
Just another item in a long list of technological failures. Love my car. Love tech. Hate this flawed tech. I didn’t sign up to be an alpha tester and I certainly don’t think any of us are being compensated in any way other than with daily frustration with comfort access, idrive7, CarPlay, driver assistance. Basically all tech in this car feels rushed, unfinished, unpolished, untested, and the lack of updates is frankly maddening. |

I get that now and then when I use remote start then get in. Which would make sense, though message should go off once I get in with the key. Usually then when I hit start it powers the car off, but then "magically" detects the key and lets me start it just fine.

I like to change mine every year regardless on my last Jeep Fob. The Jeep Summit would give similar “no key in vehicle” message if the battery wasn’t fresh in key fob. UPDATE: I just changed my BMW fob battery since I have no idea how old the factory installed battery was. Factory had a CR2030 Panasonic brand battery. I keep a good supply of fresh Energizer 2032 batteries around just for this. I noticed a nice white thick seal inside the key fob to keep out moisture. I changed my battery and I still get periodic problems with lack of key recognition. If I push one of the buttons on the fob, the care will the recognize the fob.

I've had the "vehicle key missing" message almost daily. It comes on only with one of the keys, and typically when a passenger gets out and closes the door. The key is usually in the cup holder. Tried changing the battery, it didn't make a difference. May just be a faulty fob. |

I found out that if you have your key in the same pocket as the phone, sometimes it won't recognize the fob. Particularly noticeable if you have your hands busy and try to open the "look ma, no hands" boot; in which case you realise the idiocy of "comfort access" sometimes!
Related, I have the "media key" huge key, which is as useful as a chocolate teapot, and I realized recently the battery of /that/ is dead for a while I haven't charged it -- but the rest of the key uses a "normal" battery and continue working. Thanks crunchy for that!

I have had same message a few times, I have noticed it mostly when dropping a passenger off and they open their door and get out of car. Mine is a July 2020 build with 07/2020.35. G05 40d based in UK. Never causes any other issues, I had assumed (probably wrongly now I read this ) that it was because I had key in the small closing tray just by drivers right leg... I will probably talk to Dealer now....

This is my first BMW and my only comparison to 30d is a 24hour test drive of 150 miles back in Feb. I got it 8th Sept and have circa 1500 miles on it so far. I am extremely pleased with it. The performance is very strong particularly mid range. The one stand out for me is the way it 'coasts' which is seamless and kicks in very quickly and you need to look at the dash to see it has happened. Restarting engine again is seamless and the auto stop start is so quick you never get the feeling you want to de activate it. The coasting makes gentle driving very very smooth. Fuel consumption seems good but little to compare to. In summary I absolutely love it, smile each time I drive it and am still looking for excuses to drive ... First BMW experience so far very good. If you want any more specifics PM me
