I've never had CarPlay. I'm trying to see how it fits into my life versus just using IDrive. I use an iPhone.
So far I find the navigation using IDrive and voice commands works great. So much better than my '16 F15. I understand that IDrive no longer has apps for Pandora or Spotify. So I've just been using the apps on my phone, and going through media/bluetooth connection. It sounds fine to me on HK system. I notice that I cannot send a text using IDrive and voice translation. I understand that has to be via CarPlay. But I rarely do that. So am I correct that almost all the features I need can be found in IDrive? It seems like a pain to have to dive into the settings and enable CarPlay for some stuff...and then switch back over to IDrive for others . It would be nice to have one of the preset buttons set to activate CarPlay, but understand that can't be done. Can you guys share your thoughts and how you use each system? Thanks! |

My sense is that it's an either/or decision the way BMW has it implemented.
I'd recommend trying both and seeing which fits better into your lifestyle and workflow and then going with that choice longer term. There are pros and cons to both. I'd rather just use iDrive but (so far) I'm finding CarPlay gives me better access to some features/capabilities I want. Keep in mind, you will be asked to pay for CarPlay after the first year - which is a ripoff. |

I keep wanting Car Play to work well but it seems it is never the same each time I attempt to use it. I doubt very much I will pay for this sloppy software.

I payed for carplay in my 540. 2 years in and only used it once. bmw connect drive is far superior. I think I paid $300 for life of car, if I would have known how useless it is, I would have skipped. You can still get siri on iPhone while using connect drive.

I too find myself not using CarPlay that much because iDrive 7 navigation is so good - plus you lose HUD and the amazing lane recognition when not using iDrive. But car play can be useful if you rely on third party navigation apps such as Google Maps or Waze, or for when the stock map is just not up to date.

If you are using Waze for police reports and the like, even when using iDrive when the iPhone is in the charging cradle one still gets audio alerts (once Apple Pay is cleared).

I use Apple Play for setting up my music from my iPhone the switch to one of my home screens (clock, music, phone usually) and go back and forth. It’s working out nicely for me that way. When a message comes in, I get the green apple play banner, listen to it, reply then back to home screen and BMW features.

Also, I use voice control more than ever in this vehicle. It's way more improved than ever before, this one really seems to understand me.

I find carplay invaluable because I use the podcasts app all the time, and I prefer the phone integration to the idrive interface. One of my criteria for selecting a new car was that it had to have CarPlay. My wife wanted a Range Rover or LR Discovery, but Jag-LR is only now introducing CarPlay on some models.
I've had a couple of instances where the connection was a bit flaky, but overall it's great to have the wireless connection.
