since the range is very overstated I expect maybe 30 real-world miles vs the ~50 stated.
Top speed is electronically limited not necessarily by the electric motors

I'm one to either go full electric or full petrol.... The hybrid thing to me just screams additional items to go wrong. (I get it warranty but time without sux too)

Agree. I had a 2018 530e with 30 miles stated range that only got 17 electric miles on average. Turn on the heat or AC and subtract 2 miles off the top.

Based on the use of km, I'm assuming this is the non-US version. Anyone have an idea of when this is supposed to come to the US? Consensus generally appears to be the 2021 model for US, but I've seen a thread here saying that it'll be the 2020.

My wife drives 530e. Range is 16-18 miles. I do not know where the 30 miles range comes from (heard this a couple of time), but I think this is just misunderstanding of miles vs. km.
I am really interested in 45e version. 40i is so so in comparison to 35d, 50i is a beast, but $100k is too much. I think 45e may be a good compromise. |

Exactly how I looked at it as well.
Couldn't wait so this will definitely be a strong consideration next time around (4 years). I'm sure by that time the technology will have advanced further for greater distance. But as it stands it would be perfect range for us.

On another site, I read that the battery in the 45e is 17 KWH. That's double the current size, on which I get 16-18 miles range. So, I expect 32-35 miles in real world. I've had a $1K deposit on the new Audi e-Tron and it's "in production" now, with delivery expected to be in 10 weeks. That full EV would have replaced my X5 40e, but I'm going to decline to take the e-Tron, in favor of the X5 45e. Why? The fully loaded e-Tron is MSRP mid-80's and there are no incentives on offer. An X5 45e which has an equivalent full luxo spec to the e-Tron will probably MSRP mid-70's. The lease residual on the e-Tron is reported to be 49%. The current X5 40e is 59% (10K). There will be incentives on the X5 45e. Both will receive the full $7.5K tax credit. The e-Tron has a 204 mi EPA range rating. That's a lot of range anxiety and charging time on an inter-city trip. If the X5 45e is anything like my X5 40e, it'll have a full tank range on a highway trip exceeding 600 miles--far more than my "range". A 30+ EV range will satisfy 100% of my local driving needs. My X5 40e weighs LESS than the e-Tron, even with it's ICE powerplant.
For my use case (and I'm on my third EV/PHEV), a PHEV with 30+ miles EV range makes a WHOLE LOT more sense than either a pure ICE OR an EV. When the charging infrastructure is better advanced in 3 years, and EV ranges of 300+ miles are extant with new battery technology, I'll go full EV. On the other hand, if one is a multi-car unit, an EV for local use makes a lot of sense, but, for me, not one costing over $70K. |

I have read in auto-motor und sport that battery capacity will be 24kW. I had a q7 e-Tron with 17 kW battery and range of 50 km. So I guess with 24 kW the range will be around 70 km

24 KWH would be fantastic, and result in an EV range of close to 50 mi IRL. The Q7 PHEV never made it to the USA. Was the battery totally under the rear seat? Unless BMW has made great strides on improved battery technology for higher capacity cells, or is encroaching on the very little "trunk" space in the current 40e, I don't see how BMW could get a 24 KWH battery under the seat, only. It would have to go under the floor pan, but; I thought that the new CLAR platform allowed for this, so it could be so. Another possibility is a smaller petrol tank. My 330e has only a 10 gal tank, but the 40e has the full-size 20 gal tank. I thought that the extra room needed for a 17 KWH battery was going to come from both improved battery technology AND reducing the tank size and avoid going under the floor pan. For the USA, there is very little business case for going above 17 KWH battery. That size qualifies for the maximum tax credit and for those that might be considering a PHEV, I doubt that a 50 mile EV range vs. a 33 mile range will be a big decider. USA buyers (and the CA's) are very unsophisticated about the pros and cons of PHEV v. EV and ICE. Most will only see a "range" of less than 200 miles and forget about it.

I think Ted's reference to "Both will receive the full $7.5k tax credit" is referring to the 45e and the e-Tron, not the 40e. |

On a different note, looks like they fixed the back end and made it flow more. I hate how my 2019 looks like someone forgot about the back lid, quickly cut a door with a sawz all.

I have been searching for the fuel tank capacity on the new 45e... as I was wondering if the additional battery capacity came at the expense of a smaller fuel tank. I was really hoping for a huge highway range (like the 40e has now at >600 miles).
