NEW X5 vs previous X5. What do you prefer?
As we know the X5 has been redesigned and has undergone a lot of changes. What do you prefer and why?

The G05 is significantly better in almost every way as compared to it's predecessor. If you read the reviews from the major auto publications you will see that the reviews are overwhelmingly positive. BMW did a fantastic job with the G05. The platform is solid, suspension is very comfortable, the engine is strong, the styling is attractive, and the interior tech is pretty sweet. I test drove the previous generation X5s and they just didn't fit the bill for me in terms of what I wanted in an SUV. The G05 changed my mind about the X5.

Everyone always like the previous gen more and is a critic until when they see one in person. It's the same with every new car release from new 3, 5, X etc. I like my reliable F15, but looking forward to the G05 upgrade this fall.

I didn't love the new grill, but the new car is so much better in every way, just drive one, it makes the F15 feel old and tired.

I've been pondering a similar question myself. I currently own an E70 xdrive35i and am considering upgrading to a 50i but am not sure I want a 2018 F15 or a 2019 G05.
I like the new digital instrument panel on the F15 but can easily get used to the G05. I'm more curious as to the drivability of the 2. For those who have driven both; what are your likes/dislikes of each generation?

he does have a legitimate question...
personally, the F15 exterior was much more attractive, especially the side vents/scoop and the "fatter" ass (comparing photos to photos) After seeing the G05 in person, i'm adapting to it and liking it a little more each day. There a few likes and dislikes on both ext. design for me. I never owned a previous model, so cant compare tech/options other than the exterior design. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. |

I haven't driven one yet, so difficult to compare fully, but I'm not convinced about the quality control issues, especially the seat manufacturer switch to Magna and the reasons behind it.
Definate Pro for me over the F15, is the 2 axle air suspension finally being available, plus the off-road package option as well. This would be a prime plus for me over the F15. However, despite that one big plus, for me that is offset by too many negatives, and unless BMW change some of those in the next 12-18 months, the negatives of the G05 mean I will be keeping the F15 for longer than expected, or will have to look to another manufacturer when the time comes to change. The big issue for me, is the dropping of the 40d engine which was the sweetspot for the diesel engines. All we have now is either bottom of the range 30d, or top of the range M50d......nothing in the middle With the mileage I do in UK, petrol or petrol-hybrid is just not an option. The other big negative, is cost. The G05 is way more expensive than than the F15 was only 2 years ago on a like for like spec, as BMW have decided to package up so much options that to get the same spec as my F15 I have to order and pay for a heap of other options that I don't wish to have. So, for me personally, no matter have much better the G05 is, I won't be buying one under the current circumstances.

With that out of the way....I've never owned an SUV before; the G05 is what enticed me to move; no other SUV was able to do that in the past. I can't wait to pick mine up.

2015 vs 2019 X5
I'm about 2 weeks into my 2019 X5.
I ordered every option except the height adjustment and the upgraded sound system. I included the sound deadening glass. I really liked the 2015 X5, but my wife hated it due to the harsh ride. Unlike the 2015, turbo lag is imperceptible to me. Power is dramatically smoother with amazing acceleration. Shifts are so smooth as to be imperceptible to me. It's silky smooth. The cabin is almost as quiet as the Lexus LS. I do miss the vroom vroom of the 2015. Having the large center display with customizable frames is more useful that I thought it would be. I've had a bunch of cars with a voice command system. This is the first that actually works and works exceptionally well. I thought the gesture command system was a bit over the top, but I use it a lot now. The self parking system is amazing. This is the first I have trusted to take total command of the car. I do not like the self driving feature. The car seems to "hunt" between the lane markers. Handling in this X5 in Comfort Mode seems a bit less crisp than in the prior X5. The ride in this X5 is dramatically better than in the 2015. My wife actually likes it! This is my first car with Apple Play. Being able to access Siri is great. Having most of my iPhone stuff including WAZE is a help. I do wish the seat ventilation was actually chilled air and not just cabin air. I like the seats better in this car and the massage function helps in longer trips. I'm not sure I like the lane keeping feature. It is abrupt. I'm still learning the car's features, but, so far, I think the 2019 is a far superior product than the 2015 |

I’m very surprised about the 40d situation. This engine is currently in pretty much all the range apart from the X5. I’ve driven the 30d and while it is acceptable the missing power is noticeable and for me it’s missed. As you say the 30d has also somehow manage in creep up the to 40d price point |

IMO usually the older LCI models appeal to me since that vehicle will always represent the finish draft of any model with refreshed trim, deleted fat, and practical enhancements. The only appeal of any new model is just that...it is something new. So I tend to wait for the LCI editions before making judgement OR if need be I look at a preLCI, in this case the G05, and see where potential for improvements can be made whether currently with aftermarket or retrofit kits or later on with the LCI version. Compared to the old X5 I find the new X5 to be an improvement in every department EXCEPT the lighting. I'm not a fan of the enlarged grill but I get it and I can live with it. But the slimmer headlamps looks even more diminutive adjacent to the newly enlarged snout. I also dislike the fact that the new tail lamps wrap around the side of the car almost to the point where the tail lamps are inches away from touching the gas cap!!! Furthermore I hate that they tampered with the iconic angel eye design to the point on some X5s it looks like a set of hideous spaced out led U's on opposite sides of the grills. On the outgoing X5/X6 because of the iconic angel eyes EVERYONE recognized, with awe and to some extent fear, the Ultimate Driving Machine bearing down on them in their rear view mirror. Now you don't know whether its a Subaru Forester or a Hyundai/Kia trying to pass you. On that note I think the LCI version of the new X5 will certainly address the headlamp situation. I'm also aware some post-design tweaks were likely made to accommodate the unexpected legality of not being able to have full laser headlamps, as to LED/Laser headlamps, in the NA marketplace.

In this particular case, the new X5 is built on the brand new CLAR platform which is vastly superior to the outgoing model. The ride is much improved. So go ahead and test drive one, and you will not want the older LCI model any more. Quote:
